CORA JONGSMA – VISUAL ARTIST – ARTISTIC LANDSCAPERESEARCHER
Tangible Cartographic Visualisations
Cartography is one of the oldest forms of media. The practice of making maps is an ongoing process of making and remaking how we understand and interact with our world.
The maps of felt she creates, known as Feltscapes, are based on the history of origin and current issues of cultural landscapes. These tactile maps are cartographic visualisations of the micro-relief of the landscape made out of wool and the process of felt making.
Like a landscape, felt is composed of layers that reveal a network of traces. For Cora Jongsma, the landscape is an ever-evolving narrative. Its surface narrates the saga of life, dwelling, and labor. Utilizing this Feltscaping approach gives the opportunity to map the characteristics of landscape and provide a new and sensitive empathy, interpretation and awareness of landscape.
Cora Jongsma (1968), MA, Landscapehistory and Art at the University of Groningen (2017), studied Monumental Design at the academy ArtEZ. Since 2011 she has been teaching as a tutor and researcher at several schools including Landscape architecture at the TU Delft, Academy Minerva, ArtEZ.
