Reversed Landscape
This land, once a high moor landscape, has been transformed by peat excavation. The upper soil layers vanished due to the extraction process, leaving behind vulnerable peat dykes and small haylands concealed by reed collars. Now repurposed for water leisure activities, the area requires frequent maintenance by landowners to combat erosion of the fragile peat dykes and water sedimentation.
This project was made possible by the Ljochtstill initiative of Leeuwarden, the European Capital of Culture.
