IK ADEM JOUW ZOUT
In this artistic landscape study of the lowest-lying areas of Schouwen-Duiveland (Zeeland), I explore the landscape as a body with sensitive skin. The water that surrounds us slowly seeps into our very fibers. What was once a distant threat from the sea now breathes through the pores of the clay. On Schouwen-Duiveland, the breath of the earth is saturated with brackish water that rises through salt seeps, inlays and sea clay.
A landversation with the public on the land of a salt-tolerant vegetable grower, illustrates how this arable farmer, unlike his colleagues who are entirely dependent on fresh rainwater, actually uses salty groundwater to grow his salt-tolerant vegetables.
Through the salt that we – just like the land and the matter – ‘inhale’, the past becomes not a closed chapter, but a tangible part of our physical existence.
This research and the exhibition are part of the ‘Moving along with landscape’ programme of the Bewaerschole in Burgh-Haamstede.
